..but on the other hand…

It’s been awhile, I know. Here’s my thought today. Companies get to be good or bad at sales and good or bad at execution (making products, delivering services). Typically, there’s a mix and man it can be painful.

┬áIf you’re bad at sales and good at execution, you can expect gradual organic growth over time. You’ll miss sales opportunities and may get stomped by your competition, but you’ll likely keep the customers you get.

If you’re good at sales and bad at execution, you can expect a great rise in revenue followed by a crash when the customers you sign learn that you can’t deliver. This is the most common pattern for growing companies because investing ahead of sales is anathema to most organizations.

If you’re bad at sales and bad at execution, look for a new job because your days are numbered.

If you’re good at both, you’ll rule the world. Aaah to be good at both.
